Transitioning from sedentary to active - A work in progress!

Here is a list of ideas that are helping us transition from a sedentary family to a more active one.

These ideas may not be suitable to everyone, so feel free to pick and mix:
INDOORS
  • Making the house a barefoot zone
  • Owning a small fridge (must squat low to put things in it and out again and it needs replenishing every day, which means shopping every day, which means walking to the shops every day!)
  • Removing the sofa from the main living area, replacing it with a rug and some floor cushions
  • Limiting screen time (TV, ipod, computer) for leisure
  • If using screens, changing position regularly, making sure the position is comfortable and provides good variety, such as standing while working at the computer, while stretching one calf or release the plantar fascia on a tennis ball, watching TV while doing a crescent stretch or psoas release, sitting cross-legged, then with legs straight, followed by to one side, then the other, squatting, etc. The more the better!
  • Getting rid of our bed and sleeping on a futon that gets rolled away during the day
  • Sleeping on flatter and flatter pillows and recently without
  • Hanging our washing outside to dry
  • Having indoor picnics
  • Playing board games on the floor
  • Making meals from scratch, squatting or sitting on the floor for vegetable peeling duties
  • Encouraging the children to bake with little or no help (muffins, cake, pancakes, etc.). This book is great!
  • Home educating with more standing, moving and floor sitting
  • Growing edible herbs and plants (chillis, basil, oregano)
OUTDOORS
  • Having one car and only using it when absolutely necessary (it took a while to get to that point!)
  • Walking everywhere that can be walked to in under 45 minutes
  • Carrying our shopping in a basket rather than pushing a trolley and carrying it back to our house in a bag or rucksack
  • Exploring local woods, climbing trees, balancing on fallen logs
  • Parking as far away from the house as possible.
  • Tidying up the communal areas – cutting the grass, raking leaves, etc.
  • Getting the children to walk to football training and matches and walking all or part of the way back
  • Doing regular litter picking in our surrounding area (within 30 minutes, although sometimes just walking 10 minutes, we manage to fill a whole bag!)
  • Taking our elderly neighbour's bins out on a regular basis
  • Growing some fruit and herbs (apples, pears, rhubarb, thyme, mint)
  • Doing paper work outside - better light, fresh air, nice change!
  • Holidays mean barefoot walking, swimming, exploring, climbing!

If you have any more ideas to add to the list, feel free to comment.
