The SMA, which used to be the Sports Massage Association, has been calling itself the Association for Soft Tissue Therapists for a while now. The ISRM (formerly Institute for Sport and Remedial Massage) has recently changed the name under its logo, preferring the Institute for Soft Tissue Therapists. Soft Tissue Therapy is the treatment, assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions so involves more than a massage. Massage is one of many tools used in combination with muscle energy techniques, trigger point therapy, soft tissue release and remedial exercises. I basically help people become aware of their body and learn to live in harmony with it. I look beyond the symptoms and really try and figure out what can be done to improve your condition, whether it involves muscle tightness, lack of mobility, excessive mobility, stiffness or pain. My aim is to educate on the best ways to release tension, improve stability and restore function beyond the hourly session we spend together. Come to me with a problem, I will do my very best to help you find a solution. Everyone can benefit from a soft tissue therapy session as we are all victims of a lifestyle with restricted mobility in the shoulders and the hips due to an excessive amount of time spent in the same few positions or doing the same movements repeatedly. When clients are happy in their bodies, they become better people. They smile more, are more relaxed and become more observant, more mindful. I find that clients give tips to their friends and family to help them, in the way they have been helped. Yes! Just pass it on!
