Small changes are so much easier to implement and keep up than large ones. If you make one tiny change per week, over one, two or three years, all the tiny changes will add up and, together, will amount to a huge change. Small changes are easier on the body. Our bodies need time to adjust. It might be counterproductive to do too much too soon. Aches and pains might start and that will be enough to put you off doing any more, right? I firmly believe that making a small change to the way you move in your daily life will bring greater benefits than the odd bout of exercise. I believe in learning how your body works, how to align your bony parts so muscles can work as designed. I don’t believe in squeezing shoulder blades, clenching glutes or sucking the tummy in as this creates tension, not strength. You’re likely to create hypertonic muscles, not strong, functional ones! Moving A LITTLE BIT more may be as simple as being aware of how you stand, how you sit, how you walk and how you breathe, and having a sense of the direction you want to take your body in for a better outcome Moving A LITTLE BIT more may be as simple as regularly trying to spread your toes and lift them up individually. It is important to move A LITTLE BETTER so the movements you already do are more optimal and therefore more beneficial in terms of bone density, muscle tone and range of movement. Learning about alignment and natural movement is pleasurable. Alignment is about stacking your joints so you are weight-bearing on the whole of the joints, not just part of them. Your skeleton needs to be aligned for muscles to perform the tasks they were designed for. Any shift, however small, towards neutral alignment is progress. Seeing progress is extremely rewarding and will keep you going. Be gentle on yourself. Aim for progress, not perfection!
